Where Did You Want to Be?

One day you'll wake up, and take a shower, brush your teeth, get dressed. You'll perhaps take a bite from a biscuit or a toast, a plate of nasi lemak, or nothing at all, and jump into a vehicle and go to work, to university, to school. The sky outside will be new and fresh and pale, or gloomy with grey clouds, or bursting with light and heat from the afternoon sun. There is a schedule and a to do list, people to meet, and you'll take it all in stride.

One day, you'll jump out of bed, shivering with excitement, eager for the occasions later in time. You'll fly out of the front door all ready and made up, refreshed and confident, meeting a gaggle of cheerful friends and family and together you'll head out for a celebration. There will be food and music and neon lights and flowers, or maybe a comfortable sofa, warm company, a late night movie with snacks and soft melodies.

One day, the alarm will sound, significantly, and it'll be obeyed. You'll take a deep breath, maybe a quick prayer, then steadily, carefully, put your buttons together, straighten your slacks, your jacket, and pick up the briefcase where you've meticulously placed important documents the night before. You'll step outside to a new world, a different chapter. You'll notice the new faces, the strange faces, reading you in return, weighing you in response.

One day, you'll stare out of the window, perhaps during the hush hours late at night, or maybe in a lazy, humid afternoon, and you'll wonder. You'll look around the walls, the furniture, back outside into the street, to adjacent buildings, to trees rustling in the breeze, to the pedestrians walking briskly on pavements, to the teenagers hanging around, doing nothing. You'll inhale in the events of your life, and exhale them back out in possibilities.

Maybe you'll realise that you are happy, that you have occasions to look forward to, projects that you are passionate about, and people that you believe in. Maybe you'll wonder if this is it, this life, where you were meant to end up, if this was what your 8 year old self had hoped for you. You'll reflect, with stabs of regret, or with calm contentment. In a minute the phone will ring, or somebody will knock the door, or an eternal amount of time will past, and you'll carry on with things.

One day, you won't wake up.
